Colchester ‘Camulodunum’ - Britain’s oldest recorded town and home to Colchester Garrison; a vital military base in the heart of Essex since the Roman era, established by Legio XX Valeria Victrix in AD 43, following the Roman conquest of Britain. From the seven thousand soldiers stationed in Colchester through the Napoleonic Wars to the Essex Regiment and Essex Yeomanry in World War 1, history reveals many fascinating stories of bravery from active service people within the city walls.

From the 4th Infantry Division and Home Guards of World War 2, in their valiant defence of the town against German air assaults, Colchester is a proud military town with centuries of fascinating, military history.

But, when service ends and the civilian life beckons, how does one adjust to the strange new world of “Civvy Street”? When the threshold from military to civilian life is crossed, what then?

Returning to civilian life creates huge challenges for the individual and their families. Many ex-service personnel feel underappreciated for their service experience. The overwhelming belief is that the civilian population neither understands nor cares about personal military experiences and the lifelong trauma that remains when service ends.

So in celebration of the rich history of Colchester city and our Garrison heritage we delve into incredible untold stories of bravery in service whilst following the lives of three recently ‘retired’ service personnel in their personal journeys as they navigate from active service to civilian life.
