Underdog Crew Studio Sci-Fi Project’

Project build commences autumn term, August 2024.

'Gemini Alpha', a miniature science fiction film set build - spanning an entire year. Members will work to build an entire off-planet metropolis as a fantasy filmmaking playground. Bit by bit, week by week, this world will rise from nothing but cardboard, recycled materials and electrical components to relive the magic of traditional practical forced perspective filmmaking techniques, alongside CGI and green screen technology.

Bite-sized workshops as part of our weekly studio workshop curriculum.

Teaching: Creative thinking, teamwork, collaboration, graphic design, crafting, 3D printing, basic electronics, Airbrushing and technical art, Green screen and CGI compositing, forced perspective filmmaking. Visit www.SliceofLifeFilm.com for our inspiration.

Alongside in-studio participants, young people from across the UK (or world) can partake in this innovative project by creating digital assets to include in the 'Gemini Alpha' metropolis. #NObarriers

As a show of creative alliance, LUKA and the 'Slice of Life' team will conduct regular 'Zoom' meetings with the build crew as the project develops!

EDUCATIONAL VALUES

INCLUSIVITY

INNOVATION

Removing barriers to inclusivity

Providing a safe and nurturing space for marginalised and at-risk young adults to find inspiration, motivation and a place to belong. Harnessing the power of professional film and creative pursuits to instil positivity, wellbeing and empowerment.

Providing a work-in-progress behind-the-scenes online platform, where young people can create their own digital project assets remotely to be part of the installation to remove barriers to inclusivity and encourage active on-site participation.

COMMUNITY

Showcase and public evenings

Bringing in other youth groups and family members to see our work in progress, get involved with the build and filming elements as an open exhibition format.

Towards project completion, when the fun filming begins, community groups and public can attend showcase events to get involved and interact with the project.

We aim to showcase an exciting interactive Virtual Reality element to the project, where visitors can place themselves within the environment and interact with certain elements.

A seriously cool year long project

Alongside our mission statement core activities, our new premises will allow us to begin the ‘Gemini Alpha’ project – a year long miniature sci-fi film set installation, where participants work to build an entire off-planet metropolis as a fantasy filmmaking playground.

Bit by bit, week by week, this world will rise from nothing but cardboard, recycled electrical components and 3D printed assets to relive the magic of traditional practical forced perspective filmmaking techniques, alongside CGI and green screen technology.

ASPIRATION

Teaching a wide range of skills

Working alongside industry professionals and guest tutors, project participant will learn a wide range of practical creative disciplines, including: graphic design, crafting, 3D printing, basic electronics, airbrushing and technical art, Green screen and CGI compositing and forced perspective filmmaking.

All participants will end up with a range of certificates to showcase their new skills, together with a portfolio of multi format evidence to form part of college or workplace applications.

16th AUGUST 2024

After 2-years of anticipation the build begins. Our aim is to have 20 buildings ready to instal once we (hopefully) secure our studio workshop in February. Having created quite a few props and miniatures over the past decades muscle memory kicked in and it's been real fun bringing this first building to life. Once the smoke stacks are LED flame lights are installed this should be a really interesting centrepiece to the Gemini Alpha metropolis.

CHALLENGES:  Deciding which base materials to work with. Really happy with our choice of balsa and foam board. We have many other materials to try for the next building. Let's see how things develop.

"HAZAH" MOMENT: Mixing ready mixed filler with PVA glue, acrylic paint and modelling earth for distressed wall coverings.

WEEK #2

CHALLENGES:  Testing manual tracking with our DJI OSMO on a selfie stick (4K 120FPS) does not provide the stability needed for the smoothest tracking. We re-tested the car tracking shot using our 'NEEWER motorised camera dolly' and the effects are so much nicer, with buttery smooth movement - slowed down x4 (from 4K 120fps).

"HAZAH" MOMENT: Realising that the greenscreen will not be suitable. Ordered a bright PINK SCREEN and expect keying to be so much cleaner and easier.
